I’m choosing a slightly different approach to this Midweek Madness Challenge – rather than a series of K’s I’m going on a visit to Kensington😎
Kensington is the northern part of The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. It has four stations that bear the name Kensington and we’re going to use three of these to focus on different aspects of the area.
High Street Kensington…
…has its entrance in Kensington Arcade which leads out to the High Street where we find the famous Barker’s department store…
…It was Barkers that put Kensington on the map of places to shop. Department stores slowly gave over to smaller shopping outlets and today Barkers is no more – the building is occupied by several retailers.
South Kensington…
…A busy station served by the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines. Lots of tourists stay in the nearby hotels…
…and the nearby museums attract families and school parties on day trips – The Natural History Museum on Cromwell Road…
…is probably most popular, but there’s also the Victoria & Albert. On Exhibition Road we find The Science Museum…
…and, hiding away at the north end of Exhibition Road on Kensington Gore is The Royal Albert Hall…
The theme of exhibitions carries over to the third station, Kensington (Olympia)…
…Olympia (on the left) is the surviving ‘great exhibition hall’ which still houses many events including job fayres and beer festivals. This part of the borough has a lot of new-build housing…
…much of it very exclusive – though you do get a great view of the Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction railway line!
One ‘Kensington’ railway station that didn’t make the cut is West Kensington. It sits between Earl’s Court and Baron’s Court and seems a bit detached from Kensington as a whole. I will include a shot of Kensington’s non-Kensington named station though…
…Gloucester Road.
The other place I haven’t covered – Kensington Gardens. That’s one for another day😎👍
