In this shot we’re exiting Interstate 40 west of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, to pick up Route 84 northbound. We’ve got a load of Cotton Seed on board which we’re taking from Artesia (NM) to Fort Collins in Colorado – a trip of 650 miles. The name comes from John Wayne’s sheriff, John T. Chance, in the classic western Rio Bravo. Chance is based at our Corpus Christi depot in Texas. The nearby Rio Grande river forms the border between Mexico and Texas and is known as the Rio Bravo in Mexico.

On the Photo PC it’s a recent shot from an enjoyable day’s trainspotting at Ealing Broadway…

The long lens comes in handy to cut out distractions in the foreground and allows me to use the bridge to frame the train. It also emphasises the way the slow lines curve as they approach the station from the west. The train is a Merehead Quarry to Acton aggregates service hauled by 66603. There is a second loco behind 66603, 59202, which is DiT (Dead in Train) – Being hauled as part of the train to relocate it to where it is needed. Acton is one of many depots around London that serve as delivery points for aggregates used by the construction industry. Some Acton bound trains also divide there into smaller sections for onward movement to other destinations.
