Most people who go shopping on the High Street rarely give a thought to what’s behind the façade. Parades of shops often have service roads – grimy places where deliveries are made and the rubbish collects ready for removal. Here is one such road in North Finchley…

This photo was taken 10 years ago and was one of my early forays into HDR editing. Although I achieved the effect I wanted back then I’d probably do it different now – in fact I’d probably B&W it for starters 😉

This is my entry for Nancy’s Challenge this week.

  1. A truly gritty photo.

    1. Hi Colline – yes, I was looking to convey the grimy state of these service roads 🙂

  2. Very nice photo, Martin. It’s visually interesting as you describe the areas behind the storefronts, but the colors you captured are truly special. I guess B & W would be stunning, but I like this one! I love the colors!

    1. Thanks Debra 🙂 The HDR process has enhanced the colors a bit though London bricks generally have that lovely red.

  3. Yes, I think you accomplished the gritty feeling well here. I agree a black and white interpretation of this would be interesting.

    1. Thanks Amy 🙂

  4. Great HDR work, especially for 10 years ago. I’d love to see it in B&W, too. 🙂 Thanks for joining the challenge!

    1. np Nancy – I will have to look at that one again – but I’d probably wander up to the location and take a fresh image with my current camera in B&W – it’s only 30mins walk from home!
