A native of eastern Asia, the Harlequin Ladybird is an invasive species that was first recorded in the UK in 2004. It’s entry into the UK was probably via imports of cut flowers and vegetables from Europe where the species was introduced as a biological control agent to combat infestations of various pest species in glasshouse crops. It is considered a threat to native UK ladybird species and is being monitored. Further information can be found on the Harlequin Ladybird Survey website.
