The title may seem a little confusing so I recommend checking out Dan’s CFFC post for this week. What we’re being asked to do is show Winter or Summer or both, so let’s get started.

It’s winter in the UK so lets start there. Snow doesn’t fall as often as it did when I was a child and as a result, when it does fall many drivers struggle with the unusual conditions. As a result of an accident up the hill the Police have closed off the North Circular Road in this shot…

A406 Closed Eastbound

…I believe the Officer was explaining to the Van driver that he should turn around and head back because there was no way forward for him here.

Can’t have Winter without a Robin…

Sun and Snow…

The Walks

Abandoned until the ice melts…

Metroline DEM1350 (LK62DFY) Squires Lane

…A 382 bus stopped on Squires Lane – Couldn’t find traction and was drifting towards the parked cars. Time to stop before there’s an accident. Fortunately snow doesn’t last long in London and the bus was recovered the next morning.

Lets try a couple of Summer shots. Flaming June in 1975…

45142 St Pancras JUN75

…45142 prepares to depart St Pancras. The 1E51 headcode tells me it’s going to the Eastern Region, so it has to be on a Sheffield service.

Strelitzia…

…Summer in Madeira. When I was courting my Wife I turned up at her place of employment with a bunch of these for her – Not sure the MoD knew how to handle that and she was so embarrassed 🀣

We used to call the electric locomotive classes 81 to 85 ’80-earlies’ – Progenitors for the later and highly successful classes 86 and 87, they put in sterling service after initial issues with, among other things, mercury arc rectifiers. Here’s 81003 posing at Longsight during a summer visit…

81003 at Longsight, JUN81

Let me finish with a couple of recent shots – This Summer and 66305 wanders through Upper Holloway with a London Gateway to Hams Hall intermodal…

66305 at Upper Holloway

And this Winter – In the last week of service, Class 455 5701 heads through Raynes Park on a Guildford to London Waterloo service…

5701 at Raynes Park

…The new Timetable from December 14th will no longer roster these units although I understand 6 pairs are being retained for a period to provide cover if needed. Farewell old friends – You’ve done your duty for 40 yearsπŸ‘

  1. The sliding bus is a bit scary. I’ve experienced that loss of control (fortunately not so close to other vehicles). Sad to see the workhorse train cars being retired. The commuter line in our area began operation in 2018 with locos and cars that had been retired by lines in nearby states. New paint and they were placed back in service.

    1. Thanks Dan πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘ I was reading a bit about some new cars being provided by Alstom on the CT rail website. I recognised the seats instantly πŸ˜… It’s good to see some investment in rail taking place πŸ‘

      1. Yes, we got to travel in higher style this past summer. There have been many occasions when they have added cars to the trains to accommodate anticipated higher numbers of passengers. It’s a good feeling to see this line become a success. It’s the first new rail service in CT in many years.

      2. It will take time but I’m sure the passengers will come. That’s been the experience in the UK – provide the service and people will ride. Both of our nations have had the anti-rail governments experience and hopefully people have learnt from that.

      3. Is your station finished yet Dan πŸ€”

      4. πŸ™No. I’m not sure what all is left to do.

      5. That is getting crazy. I am sure you “hinted” that it might be ready at the start of summer this year

      6. It was supposed to open this past summer. It might be due to the fact that they are also restoring the old train station to be a welcome center. Initially, the old station was not to have anything to do with the new one. With the State of CT, Amtrak, The Federal government and our town involved, I guess we can expect a little confusion.

      7. Anything involving the government can always lead to delays and mismanagement, especially with the latest incantation of US Federal Gov’t who don’t know their arse from their elbow

      8. Our previous President was impressed with railroads and pushed the funding through Congress. If it hadn’t been for him, we wouldn’t be getting this station at all. The current administration hasn’t a clue.

      9. Be careful Dan – Someone might be reading this…

      10. I’m sure, but this is true. It makes me mad when politicians fight to block a project, lose the fight and then, when the project becomes reality, they step up and take credit for the success.

      11. That’s politicians the world over πŸ˜’

      12. Honestly, I don’t know how they sleep.

  2. That snow was treacherous. I guess you hunkered down for a day or two. I like that Robin as well as all the trains πŸ˜€

    1. Thanks Brian πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘ Snow can often be treacherous in the UK mainly because we don’t really have a snow tyre and chains culture. Most drivers can adjust and get home. I drove all the way back from near Stansted to home in a blizzard once when I had an Austin Metro. Much maligned as those cars were, I was glad of all the weight from the engine being over the front wheels πŸ™πŸ‘ You can always rely on a Robin to pose 🀣

      1. Some cars do have an advantage to some conditions

      2. That’s true – I left a lot of Jag’s at the side of the road that night 🀣
