What counts as New?… My typed words were new a couple of seconds ago. The image I took on Saturday is a few days old… Is it still New? New is as subjective a term as Old. With that thought in mind I give you The Metal Box Building…
7381 at Reading (1975)
Built in 1974, and commissioned in 1975, Queen’s House in Reading was just a few months old and still being completed when I took this image – so it was New at the time. The building represented a new style of architecture and included many radical new features in its octagonal space. It became an icon of Reading and a source of fierce debate – people either loved it or hated it. Born white, it became very grey and last ditch efforts to make it a listed building failed. It was demolished in October 2014. I wonder if the next New building will be so Iconic?

  1. Old old often lasted longer than the New new.
    Irony.

    1. Yes, there is always Irony Judith. New buildings in London can have a very limited lifespan – as little as 10 years for some! Yet, in between, there are churches that are 500 yrs old or more! Moving out of London I can go to St Albans Abbey – some parts of it are clearly robbed from the Roman walls and its Norman parts date back to 1087! A place of real history and one where I find spiritual enlightenment.

  2. It reminds me of Get Carter!

    1. LoL – I think a bit far south for that excellent film but the architecture is from the same period 🙂
