I always like to photograph transport in its environment rather than focussing in solely on the vehicle. So here we have a 74 bus running along Lillie Road in West Brompton with the added extra of a ‘Ghost Sign’ for Brymay Matches on the building across the street…
74 Bus

West Brompton Station and the added Extra in this shot is the young lady holding a conversation on her phone. If she hadn’t sat there I’d probably have composed the shot differently. The Locomotive running through the station is also an Extra. It should be hauling the 4B37 Wembley Europorte to Dollands Moor vans but on this day there was no requirement for the train to run so instead the locomotive ran as the 0B37 – light engine back to Dollands Moor to be in the right position for its next duty.

  1. The primaries have your usual clarity, but both “extras” are surprising and fun!
(The sky above Lillie Road is especially cheerful!)

    1. It was a lovely bright day with periods of cloud – the second shot looks flat by comparison because the sun had gone behind the clouds. I love finding those old adverts as they give human history to the image. 50yds down the road in the opposite direction there was an old advert for the Daily Torygraph – catch that one at https://www.flickr.com/photos/martin_addison/14214092317/ . Thanks for the kind comment 🙂

  2. Cool! Might be fun in B&W

    1. Thanks Tina – Sometimes B&W is a great idea. I think I probably needed the sun a bit further round for it to work well here – with the front of the bus and the advert being in shadow I decided that the colours were important. But thanks for the suggestion 🙂

  4. Nice shots, they are very alive, we can feel the moment, the movement.

    1. Thanks Elizabeth 🙂

  5. Wonderful atmosphere and balance in both shots Martin. I know this part of town so well I feel as though I am traveling the District Line!

    1. Thanks Patti – You can guess that I arrived via the Overground rather than the District Line 😉 You’ll remember North End Road as you know the area – it was as congested as ever at the junction with Lillie Road!

  6. “I always like to photograph transport in its environment rather than focussing in solely on the vehicle.” Absolutely! This is what makes the pictures come to life and gives them context.

    1. Hi Danny – thanks for the comment. Hope you are well 🙂
