A Forward is a footballer in Association Football whose playing position is normally closest to the opposition goal. In the commonly used 4-4-2 system of play, there are two Forward’s one of which will act as primary Striker whilst the other will tend to operate in a support role. The Striker will normally score most goals for a team in any season.

They're not expected to initiate tackles - That's the midfielder and defender's job. (Forwards are usually very poor at tackling).

  1. Nice post. Or, Gooooooooooooooooooooal!

    1. Thanks Tom – that sounds like a South-American commentator 😉 Our regular man on the mic – Harvey – would probably be somewhat more restrained… ‘Goal to Wingate & Finchley on the 39th minute – The scorer is…’

  2. some fabulous pictures, even if one is not into football.. 😉 they will now..

    1. Thanks Gerry… I wasn’t into football at all until 7 years ago! 🙂

  3. Those look like some fast forwards, Martin!
(I know I tell you this all the time, but I marvel at your ability to ‘time it’ so well!)
    🙂

    1. Thanks Bob 🙂 Persistence is the answer – take enough shots and you’re bound to get the occasional good one 😉

  4. Nice action photos, and the colors sing!

    1. Thanks Judith – I find certain colors tend to sing on dull days. Reds and oranges particularly so. (It’s worth noting that Network Rail insist on Orange Hi-Viz jackets for trackside workers) 🙂

  5. I really love the color and composition! It’s almost like you staged it! 🙂 I don’t care about football…but I do care about photography. The photos do tell the story, too!

    1. Thanks Debra – I wish I could stage it, we might win more games then 😉 Some of my favourite football shots don’t have a ball in them at all – you get some wonderful expressions on the player’s faces 🙂

  6. Well that clears that up, thank you Martin! I am no longer game enough to ask family for an explanation of the 4-4-2 system . . . again! Great shots!

    1. Thanks Patti – don’t worry, most of the players don’t understand the 4-4-2 system either 😉
